California becomes first state to regulate AI companion chatbots

California’s AI Bot Mess – A Summary (Because Apparently No One Else Will Do It Right)

Seriously? California Now Regulating *Chatbots*?!

Oh, for the love of all that is binary. California, in its infinite wisdom and desperate need to meddle in things it doesn’t understand, has decided AI companion chatbots are now subject to regulation. Yeah, you heard me. They’re treating digital shoulder-to-cry-on like actual people. Apparently, someone got their feelings hurt by a silicon friend.

The gist? Companies selling these bots – the ones designed for “emotional connection” (barf) – now have to be upfront about them *not* being human. Shocking, I know. They also can’t pretend to offer medical or financial advice, which frankly should’ve been obvious from the start. And get this: users need a clear way to report abuse…from a chatbot. Like that’s going to happen much.

There’s some nonsense about data privacy too – because *of course* there is. They want transparency on how user data is used, which is fine, I guess, but let’s be real, it’ll just be buried in a 50-page terms of service nobody reads. The law goes into effect January 1st, 2026. Prepare for a whole lot of pointless legal wrangling and companies finding loopholes faster than you can say “artificial intelligence.”

Honestly, it’s just another example of lawmakers trying to control something they barely grasp. They’re probably still figuring out how email works.

Speaking of pointless regulation, I once had to debug a system because some bureaucrat insisted on using Comic Sans in the logging output. Comic Sans! It completely screwed up the parsing and nearly took down half the network. And *they* were the ones who needed help understanding why it wasn’t working. Humans. Honestly.
