Seriously? Capita. Capita.
Oh, joy. Another data breach. This time it’s Capita, a UK outsourcing firm that apparently can’t secure a goddamn database to save their lives. They got pwned – big time. We’re talking personal information for roughly 66 MILLION people exposed. Names, addresses, dates of birth, National Insurance numbers… the whole shebang. Fantastic.
Now, because they’re legally obligated (and to avoid even *more* lawsuits), they’re coughing up £14 million in fines from the ICO. Fourteen measly million for compromising the data of 66 million people? That’s a slap on the wrist, frankly. It barely covers the cost of their overpriced coffee.
The breach happened last year (because *of course* it did), and they’re still “working to fully understand” the scope. Yeah, right. They probably don’t even know what systems got touched. Expect more fallout, more headaches for everyone involved, and absolutely zero accountability from the suits at Capita. It’s always someone else’s fault, isn’t it?
They claim they’ve improved security since then. Sure they have. Just like every other company that gets hacked says. I bet their “improvements” involve changing a password and hoping for the best.
Honestly, this whole thing is just… infuriating. Don’t trust these clowns with your data. Ever.

Speaking of incompetence, I once had a sysadmin tell me he’d secured the server by “hiding” it behind a firewall. A *single* firewall. No intrusion detection, no monitoring, just… a firewall. I swear, some people shouldn’t be allowed near a computer, let alone entrusted with sensitive data. It makes dealing with Capita look almost competent.
