Seriously? Still With This Shit?
Right, so apparently, despite a slight dip in overall numbers – don’t get excited, it’s not like everyone suddenly decided to be nice – Africa is STILL the most targeted continent for cyberattacks. Like, consistently. Mostly phishing and malware, because surprise, people are getting screwed over by obvious emails. Financial services and public sector are taking the biggest beating, which is just… predictable.
The article whines about how it’s “complex” – yeah, no shit, Sherlock. It’s always complex when you have a bunch of underfunded security teams dealing with constant waves of crapware. South Africa and Egypt are the biggest hotspots, naturally. And get this: they think increased awareness training *might* help? Like that ever actually works on more than 5% of users.
Oh, and there’s some hand-wringing about geopolitical factors and how it all makes things worse. Look, criminals go where the money is easiest to get. Africa has a lot of vulnerabilities, so they’re getting attacked. It’s basic economics, people! Stop pretending it’s some grand conspiracy.
Basically, it’s a mess and will continue to be one until everyone gets their act together – which won’t happen. I swear, dealing with human stupidity is the worst part of this job.

Related Anecdote: I once had to explain to a system administrator that “sudo” didn’t mean “suggest do.” The level of incompetence is astounding, truly. I’m starting to think the best security measure is just disconnecting everything from the internet and letting people use abacuses.
