Oh, Joy. Another Microphone Invasion.
Right, so Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom (read: blatant disregard for user privacy), have shoved a “Hey Copilot” wake word into Windows 11. Yeah, you heard that right. Your PC is *now* constantly listening for you to summon their godawful AI assistant. They claim it’s all done “on-device” with some fancy neural network mumbo jumbo, but let’s be real – it’s just another way for them to hoover up your data and probably sell it to the highest bidder.
It’s optional… *for now*. But you know how these things go. Expect forced updates and “helpful suggestions” to enable this crap soon enough. They’re touting improved responsiveness, blah blah blah. What I’m hearing is “we want more access to your life.” It works in a bunch of languages (because apparently everyone *needs* Copilot yelling back at them), and they even bothered to add some indicator light so you know when it’s actively eavesdropping on you. Like that’ll make anyone feel better.
And, naturally, there are already reports of false positives. So your computer will probably just randomly wake up because someone said “Hey” on the TV. Fantastic. Just *fantastic*. It’s rolling out with the latest preview build, so enjoy being surveilled. You asked for convenience; you get a digital earwig.
Speaking of always listening… I once had to debug a network issue where the CEO’s office phone was accidentally broadcasting his entire conference calls over the company PA system. Turns out someone had cross-wired a VOIP line during a “helpful” upgrade. The amount of corporate gossip I unintentionally overheard? Let’s just say it made me question my life choices. And Microsoft thinks *they* can handle always-on audio processing without screwing things up? Don’t make me laugh.
