So apparently, the geniuses over at Wired have discovered that AI models are going completely batshit stupid from training on their own recycled garbage. Yeah, you heard that right: when you feed an AI nothing but AI-generated crap, it starts drooling out even worse crap. Who could’ve possibly seen that coming?! Oh wait, literally everyone with half a working neuron and a coffee-fueled sense of despair.

These researchers ran a so-called “study,” which might as well have been titled *“What happens when you feed stupidity back into itself?”* And shocker of the century—it turns out AIs trained on model-generated slop start hallucinating, losing coherence, and generating the digital equivalent of a head injury. It’s like giving ChatGPT a lifetime supply of social media posts and watching it evolve into your racist uncle on Facebook.

Apparently, when we keep training models on their own outputs, we get something like “model collapse,” which is just academic jargon for “the AI is eating its own ass and calling it progress.” Social media’s endless feedback loops already melted human brains, and now the machines are joining the party. Perfect. We’ve basically built the world’s most sophisticated stupidity accelerator.

But sure, keep scraping the internet for “content,” keep letting models regurgitate their own noise until everything online reads like it’s been passed through ChatGPT, Twitter, and a blender set to “existential despair.” Soon we won’t know if an article was written by a human, a bot, or a hamster that’s just given up on life.
