Google Chrome to warn users before opening insecure HTTP sites

Google Chrome’s Latest “Security Feature”: Because Apparently, Clicking Stupid Links Is Still a Thing

Right, so the fine folks at Google decided to slap another shiny warning label on Chrome. Starting soon, if you try to open an insecure HTTP site – you know, those naked, unencrypted excuses for websites – Chrome will flash a big scary “You’re about to do something dumb” message. Because apparently in 2024, people STILL haven’t figured out what that little padlock in the address bar means. Bloody marvellous.

The change is part of Google’s never-ending crusade to make the web safer, or at least to feel like they’re doing something useful while they rake in ad money. Chrome will treat HTTP pages with all the suspicion of a sysadmin reading an email from “support@totallylegitbank.ru”. Instead of silently loading them, it’ll pop up a “Security Warning” page that basically says, “Mate, you sure you want to do this? The site’s about as trustworthy as a drunk raccoon with your credit card.”

Why this sudden motherly concern from our overlords at Google? Well, Chrome already flags logins or forms on insecure pages, but apparently, too many people clicked through those without a care. So now, they’re just going to shame everyone into compliance. Classic corporate parenting – instead of educating users, they just slap a new layer of “don’t be an idiot” prompts over everything.

Look, HTTPS has been around for bloody ages. Certificates are cheap (or free), Let’s Encrypt will practically hand you one on a silver platter, and there’s absolutely no excuse left for running a site that’s easier to hijack than a kid’s Minecraft server. But sure, let’s pretend this is news!

Oh, and they’ll be testing it in Chrome 127 before unleashing it on the masses. Can’t wait for the flood of “Why won’t my website open?” tickets from dusty old business sites last updated during the Bush administration. That’s going to be a *real* treat.

So, yeah: Chrome will now babysit users even more aggressively, because the internet is still full of numpties who click whatever link they see. Welcome to the future – where your browser has to protect you from yourself.

Reminds me of the time a user complained that “the internet was down” because they typed http// instead of https://. I offered to upgrade their connection with a hammer. It didn’t fix their problem, but it sure as hell fixed mine.
