Perplexity strikes multi-year licensing deal with Getty Images

Perplexity and Getty Team Up for Yet Another Corporate Lovefest

Oh great, because the world absolutely *needed* another bloody AI-company-cuddles-up-with-a-media-giant story. So here we go — Perplexity, the chatty bastard that thinks it knows everything, decided to shack up with Getty Images in a multi-year licensing deal. Yeah, apparently the geniuses over there realized that “scraping the internet for random shit” wasn’t quite as tidy as “getting sued for using other people’s photos,” so they figured, “Let’s just pay Getty before they chase us with lawyers.” Smart move, I guess, for people who got tired of playing ‘copyright whack-a-mole.’

Now, this deal means that Perplexity can spew out even more polished, image-laden “answers” without stepping on the toes of angry photographers. Getty, meanwhile, gets to stuff their already overfed coffers while pretending they’re “empowering AI innovation” — code for “we like money, thanks.” So in short: Perplexity gets shiny, legal eye candy for its chatbot, Getty gets a few more zeroes on its balance sheet, and the rest of us get to listen to more corporate drivel about “revolutionizing information consumption.” Fucking thrilling. Truly inspirational stuff.

And you can bet this is just the start — every AI firm’s gonna be rushing to “legally license” content before regulators or angry creators smack them upside the head. Welcome to AI’s version of Netflix, folks — everything’s licensed, sanitized, and utterly devoid of soul. But hey, at least no one’s getting sued… for now.

Reminds me of the time the system admin staff tried “sharing” the company’s licensed stock photo folder on a public drive. Took two days before legal started foaming at the mouth and I had to “accidentally” delete everything — twice — just to make the noise stop. Some lessons you learn the hard way, like don’t piss off Getty or they’ll sue the pixels off your ass.
