Migrating WSUS to Windows Server 2025 – Because Apparently We Can’t Have Nice Things
Alright, strap in, you miserable lot. The article goes on about how to drag that festering corpse of a service called WSUS over to Windows Server 2025. Because apparently, some sadist at Microsoft decided you shouldn’t just hit “migrate” and be done with it — oh no, you’re going to do this the “proper” way, step by excruciating step.
First, you’ve got to install the WSUS role on the shiny new Windows Server 2025 box because obviously, you can’t just lift and shift the old garbage. Then, you’ve got to move all your update files — the lovely gigabytes of useless patch cruft — over to the new server. Joy. And that database? Yeah, you’ve got to migrate that too, because Microsoft’s idea of fun is watching you swear at SQL connections that refuse to behave.
Then there’s the whole bit where you “reconfigure” stuff — because it wouldn’t be a proper WSUS experience without spending three hours wondering why clients still talk to the old server like some clingy ex. You’ll check GPOs, tweak ports, and probably curse the existence of every previous sysadmin who ever thought setting this up was a good idea.
Once you’ve done all that, congrats! You’ve successfully wasted half a day moving the same pile of updates from one box of Windows misery to another, only to realize it still runs like a bag of flaming excrement.

Reminds me of the time I had to migrate an entire WSUS setup over a weekend. After the tenth “unexpected error,” I decided the error wasn’t unexpected at all — it was just WSUS being WSUS. Shot the old server (figuratively) and told management it “failed gracefully.” They bought it.
