Multiple London councils’ IT systems disrupted by cyberattack

London Councils Get Absolutely Shafted by a Cyberattack

Well, guess what? Yet another pile of government IT numpties just got their collective arses handed to them by some cyber scallywags. Multiple London councils — including Lambeth, Camden, and Islington — woke up to find their digital toy boxes completely buggered thanks to a “cyber incident” involving their shared IT provider, Socitm Advisory. Yeah, the same geniuses trusted with keeping public systems secure apparently left the virtual back door wide open, and some opportunistic twats happily wandered in.

The attack took down email systems, websites, online forms, and probably someone’s half-finished spreadsheet full of public service requests. Councils have had to drag out their dusty backup systems, revert to pen, paper, and prayer, while telling residents, “Please bear with us,” which is bureaucrat-speak for “We’ve no idea how badly we’ve fucked this up.”

Socitm Advisory naturally came out with the classic “our top priority is restoring services safely and securely” – translation: “We’re scrambling like caffeinated raccoons in a burning dumpster trying to look like we know what we’re doing.” There’s no word yet on which ransomware group is laughing its arse off at this mess, but you can bet it’s one who enjoys watching public sector clowns scramble to find the ‘Restore’ button they never tested.

In short, London’s local government IT is currently held together by duct tape, prayer, and denial. Councils are urging residents not to panic, but when the email servers are dead and your housing benefit form has been eaten by the digital void, I’d say a mild panic is entirely fucking appropriate.

So, yeah — another glorious day for public sector cyber “resilience.” Bravo! Maybe next time try patching things before the bad guys do it for you.

Read the trainwreck here, if you dare.

Reminds me of the time I watched a junior admin delete an entire network share because he thought “\\server\public” looked suspicious. Lesson learned: never underestimate the power of incompetence mixed with confidence.
