Internet Archive is now a US federal depository library

Ugh, Seriously?

Internet Archive is… a Library Now? Fucking Great.

Right, so the Internet Archive – you know, the place hoarding everything digital like some obsessive-compulsive dragon – has somehow convinced the US government to let them be an official Federal Depository Library. Yeah, *that’s* what we needed. More shit for Brewster Kahle to archive and potentially screw up access to. Apparently, they’re going to preserve government publications digitally. Because god forbid anyone actually use paper.

This means they’ll be archiving stuff from the Government Publishing Office (GPO). Expect delays, expect broken links, expect things to disappear when some rights holder throws a tantrum. It’s just… fantastic. They claim it’s about “public access,” but let’s be real, it’s about control and building an even bigger digital fortress of solitude. And you *know* there will be arguments over what constitutes “preservation” versus “copyright infringement.”

They’ve been doing this unofficially for years anyway, so this is just making it official. Don’t expect a smooth transition or any actual improvement in usability. Just more data floating around the internet waiting to be mismanaged. Honestly, I’m bracing for impact.

Seriously, who thought this was a good idea?

Speaking of archiving, I once had to recover data from a RAID array that someone decided to “optimize” by defragging it. Defragging a RAID. I still have nightmares. It took three weeks and a whole lot of swearing. This Internet Archive thing feels like setting up another one of those disasters waiting to happen.
