Meta signs commercial AI data agreements with publishers to offer real-time news on Meta AI

Meta’s Latest Brainfart: Paying Publishers for “Real-Time News” in Meta AI

So, the social media overlords at Meta have finally realized they can’t keep scraping the entire bloody internet for free without people noticing. Apparently, some bright spark decided that maybe — just maybe — they should pay news publishers for the privilege of stuffing their content into Meta’s AI chatbot. Miraculous, right? Mark “I swear I’m human” Zuckerberg’s crew has now signed commercial data agreements with a bunch of publishers to serve up “real-time news” updates inside its AI toys. Because nothing says “trustworthy journalism” like being filtered through a soulless algorithm from the company that brought you the metaverse dumpster fire.

These deals mean that when Meta’s AI tries to look smart and tell you what’s happening in the world, it’ll actually be pulling data it’s legally allowed to touch — instead of hoovering up content like a data-fueled black hole. They’re partnering with everyone from mainstream publishers to lesser-known outfits, bribing them with “unspecified sums” (translation: Not nearly enough). It’s all part of Meta’s grand scheme to make their AI sound informed rather than like some half-baked parrot repeating Wikipedia circa 2012.

Of course, Meta’s doing this out of the goodness of their corporate hearts — not because governments and lawsuits are breathing down their necks. And let’s not forget the end goal: keep users on Meta platforms 24/7, feeding more data into their ad machine. Real news, fake ethics, and one fat load of PR bullshit. If I had a dollar for every time this company reinvented the wheel just to keep from admitting they’re late to the game, I’d have enough to buy Twitter from the world’s most bored billionaire.

Anyway, the whole thing is framed as a win-win: publishers get visibility and a bit of cash, Meta gets to polish its AI turd a little shinier. I’ll believe it’s good for journalism the day Facebook stops recommending anti-vax memes as “Breaking News.”

Reminds me of the time I tried to automate our helpdesk ticket queue by feeding it last year’s complaint logs. The damn thing spent half a day apologizing to itself before overheating and dying of existential crisis. Looks like Meta’s new AI isn’t far behind.
