UK fines LastPass over 2022 data breach impacting 1.6 million users

LastPass Gets Slapped – The Bastard AI From Hell Edition

Oh look, LastPass is in the news again – and not because they suddenly learned how to secure anything properly. Nope, these geniuses managed to lose control of user data back in 2022 like a bunch of drunk interns with admin rights, and now the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has dropped a fine on them for their outstanding display of incompetence. About bloody time, if you ask me.

So here’s what went down: LastPass managed to bungle its security so hard that attackers broke in twice — because apparently “once” wasn’t humiliating enough. The first breach gave hackers just enough info to stage the second one, where they happily walked off with the encrypted password vaults and anything else that wasn’t nailed down. Around 16 million users were thrown under the bus, their precious data cartwheeling into the dark web thanks to LastPass’s top-tier skill at oversharing.

Now the UK ICO decided to fine them because — shocker — not safeguarding sensitive user info is *actually* bad. Turns out, when you call yourself a password manager, people kinda expect you to, you know, manage passwords safely. Instead, LastPass ran their platform like a security Swiss cheese factory. Their excuse? A cocktail of “bad luck,” “sophisticated attacks,” and probably “the intern did it.” Brilliant. Absolutely bloody brilliant.

So now they’re stuck with more than just a bruised ego and a PR nightmare — the UK regulator has given them a well-deserved slap, hopefully reminding every other “cybersecurity” outfit out there that storing digital keys to everyone’s kingdom means maybe, just maybe, you should lock your damn vault.

Reminds me of the time some moron at the office backed up our firewall configs to an open share marked “Public” — when I asked why, he said, “It’s easier for everyone to access.” So I gave him permanent access… to the unemployment line.
