University of Sydney Gets Hacked – Because Apparently Nobody There Knows What a Firewall Is
Right, strap in, because this one’s a real clusterfuck. The University of Sydney – yes, the one that’s supposed to be full of clever bastards doing research and educating tomorrow’s geniuses – just got its digital pants pulled down by some unknown asshats. A data breach exposed info belonging to both students and staff because obviously, someone thought, “security is optional, right?” Fucking amateurs.
The breach happened through a third-party service provider (read: some cheap-ass contractor who probably uses “Password123” on everything), which apparently had access to sensitive data. The uni is now acting all surprised, doing that corporate dance of “we take this incident very seriously” while trying not to soil whatever credibility they had left. No, not *all* data was stolen, they say – just enough to make everyone uncomfortable and possibly blackmailable. Bravo, IT team, bravo.
As usual, the uni’s telling people to “remain vigilant” – translation: “You’re on your own, mate. Good luck with the phishing emails.” And of course, they’re “working closely with cybersecurity experts” – which means a bunch of consultants are about to bill them the GDP of a small country for telling them to turn on two-factor authentication. The Australian government is probably pissed, the staff are terrified their payroll info is floating around the dark web, and the students are adding one more reason to hate tuition fees. Business as fucking usual in higher education.

Reminds me of that time I told a uni sysadmin to patch their servers, and they said they couldn’t because “it might break something.” Yeah, it broke something all right – their bloody sense of security when ransomware took their whole network hostage. Some people just need an education in common sense.
