Idiots Are Using AI to Play Detective and It’s Going to Shit

Right, so apparently the internet’s self-appointed geniuses have decided that AI facial recognition is their new Ouija board for justice. After the tragic shooting of Renee Good, all the half-brained sleuths online have fired up their bargain-bin machine learning crap to “identify” the federal agent involved. Spoiler alert: they’re wrong. Spectacularly, painfully wrong. They’ve been fingering random poor bastards who had absolutely *nothing* to do with it. Because of course they are. What’s a disaster without the internet making it worse?

Wired basically says the same thing I just did but with fewer “fucks” and more data. Deepfakes, dodgy face matches, and conspiracy wankers think their Photoshop-level AI wizardry means they can outdo actual investigators. These digital vigilantes are spreading fake IDs, doxxing innocent people, and ruining lives—all in the name of “truth.” Meanwhile, the tech platforms are doing their usual dance of “we’re looking into it” while AI vendors swear blind their tools “aren’t the problem.” Yeah, tell that to the guy getting death threats because some Reddit detective fed a blurry screenshot into a dodgy AI app and declared him Public Enemy #1.

So what’s the moral of the story? Maybe, just maybe, don’t trust an algorithm that can’t tell your cat from your coffee mug to identify a government agent involved in a bloody federal shooting. But sure, dumbasses of the web—keep chasing digital ghosts with your bullshit “AI evidence.” I’m sure justice will be served right after you finish screwing up a few more innocent lives.

Reminds me of the time a user told me their “AI antivirus” deleted the company’s entire payroll system because it “looked suspicious.” Yeah, mate, your bank account balance looked suspicious too—now it’s gone. Idiots.
