University of Hawaii Cancer Center Gets Shafted by Ransomware Morons
Well, ain’t this just bloody typical. The University of Hawaii Cancer Center — you know, the folks actually trying to *help* people — got smacked upside the digital head by a pack of ransomware-wielding dickheads. The poor bastards had to deal with “unauthorized access” that knocked their systems around like a Windows 95 machine trying to install a modern browser. The attack happened back in November 2023, but of course, the details are just oozing out now, like a festering data breach sore nobody wanted to look at.
So what did these cyberassholes snag? Potentially personal data from a bunch of staff, patients, and medical collaborators — because, of course, that’s where the real payday is. No word yet on who the scumbags behind it are, but you can bet they’re sitting somewhere in a dim basement, congratulating themselves on “owning” a cancer research center instead of doing something productive, like gargling bleach.
To their credit, the Cancer Center’s IT team pulled the plug faster than a sysadmin spotting BitLocker on a unapproved employee flash drive. Systems were taken offline for containment, investigations kicked off, and the university’s now sending out the classic “we take your privacy seriously” statements — the PR equivalent of “yeah, we’re screwed, but don’t panic yet.”
And of course, the usual “no indication yet” bullshit is floating around — no “indication” that data was misused, no “evidence” that the attackers were successful… just the usual corporate way of saying “we’re hopping mad but pretending to be calm while we Google ‘ransomware decryptor’ at 2 AM.”
Honestly, if you’re running a critical research center and haven’t hardened your systems like Fort Knox, you’re asking for these cyber-gremlins to come tap-dancing through your network. Maybe next time, they’ll invest more in security and less in coffee machines.

Reminds me of the time some genius in accounting ignored my warning and opened a “free cruise” email attachment — encrypted half the damn finance department before lunch. I told them the ransom note was less insulting than their budgeting spreadsheets. Bastards.
