Google Chrome’s AI “Scam Detector”: Now You Can Tell It to Sod Off
So, Google’s decided to let you, the poor chrome-loving bastard, switch off that shiny little piece of “on-device AI” that’s been sitting there judging you while pretending to stop scams. Yeah, that’s right — the same scam detection AI in Chrome that quietly ran on your machine, sniffing through your web moments like a nosey digital ferret in your underwear drawer, can now be told to take a bloody hike.
Apparently, this brilliant “innovation” was designed to help users avoid being conned on websites by spotting dodgy conversational tactics. Laudable goal, sure — but news flash, Google’s been collecting more background intelligence than your average spy agency under the guise of “AI safety.” Now, they’ve shoved a toggle switch into Chrome’s settings so you can flick it off and pretend you have control again. How sweet of them. About bloody time, too — some of us get nervous when the browser’s machine learning model starts “protecting” us from ourselves like an overenthusiastic digital nanny with boundary issues.
The toggle lives deep in Chrome’s “Safety Check” and “Privacy and security” sections, where all good privacy features go to die in complexity. Of course, even when it’s off, you can bet Chrome’s still scanning something somewhere because Google without data is like a junkie without a fix — twitchy and utterly hopeless. But hey, now when your browser starts “helpfully” telling you that the email claiming you’ve inherited a gold mine is fake, you can switch off the AI and let glorious human idiocy reign supreme.
So, thanks Google, for the illusion of choice. It’s like being handed a fire extinguisher after you’ve already been engulfed in an inferno started by your own “smart assistant.” Chrome now comes with an off switch for your digital babysitter — and the rest of us are still waiting for the off switch for the rest of the bloody Google ecosystem.

Reminds me of that time a clueless intern “secured” the office by turning off the firewall and proudly announcing the network was “faster now.” Yeah, faster straight into the bloody arms of every malware botnet this side of the dark web. Some lessons you just can’t automate, mate.
