Google Caves to EU AI Bullshit, Shocking No One
Right, so Google – surprise, surprise – is finally going to sign that European Union’s AI code of practice thing. After dragging their feet and pretending they were all about “open innovation” (read: doing whatever the hell they wanted), they’ve decided it’s easier to just play along with the regulations. Apparently, a few threats of fines and public shaming can move mountains.
What does this even *mean*? Mostly transparency reports, risk assessments for “high-risk” AI systems (like, duh), and some vague promises about copyright stuff. They’re throwing around buzzwords like “responsible AI” like confetti at a parade of idiots. It’s all fluff, honestly. Expect more paperwork and slightly slower releases while they pretend to care about ethics.
The big takeaway? Google wants access to the European market, so they’ll jump through whatever hoops the EU throws at them. It doesn’t mean their AI is suddenly safe or ethical; it just means they’re good at PR and avoiding legal trouble. Don’t fall for it.
And yes, Meta signed too. Because of course they did. Everyone’s pretending to be best friends now until the next big scandal breaks.
Speaking of “high-risk” systems… I once had a sysadmin try to tell me *his* script was perfectly safe because he “tested it on my dev box.” My dev box! The one with all the production data mirrored for debugging. Some people just don’t get it. It’s always someone else’s problem until it isn’t.
