CISA Gives Federal Agencies a Kick Up the Ass Over Ancient Edge Devices
Well, about bloody time! The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) just told federal agencies to stop being lazy bastards and replace their ancient, end-of-life network edge devices. Yeah, those crusty old security boxes that haven’t seen a firmware update since the damn Bush administration. Turns out running outdated crap connected directly to the internet is a catastrophically stupid idea — who knew?
CISA slapped these agencies with a “get-your-shit-together” order, basically saying, “Replace that garbage, or you’re toast.” They’re sick of patchless junk acting as open doors for every wannabe hacker and cybercriminal with a basement and a Red Bull addiction. The mandate’s part of what’s called a BOD (Binding Operational Directive), which is bureaucrat-speak for “do it or we’ll make your lives miserable.”
Apparently, some agencies are still clinging to obsolete gear like it’s the Holy Grail of incompetence, despite the fact that vendors have long stopped patching them. That’s right — boxes from companies who’ve packed up and moved on, leaving security holes the size of Texas. CISA’s now telling everyone to dump that digital garbage, upgrade to supported hardware, and stop pretending their broken firewalls are “still fine.”
In summary: CISA’s cleaning up the federal IT graveyard, federal agencies are whining about “budget constraints,” and the rest of us are just waiting for the next preventable breach story so we can collectively roll our eyes. If you’re still running EOL network gear in 2024, congratulations — you’re officially the cybersecurity equivalent of a clown juggling grenades.

Reminds me of the time some genius left a Windows 2003 server running in production “because it still works.” Yeah, until it didn’t — and then we spent three days cleaning up the digital equivalent of a dumpster fire fueled by bad decisions and expired licenses. Some people never learn.
