Oh, Great. Another AI Conference.
Right, so Wired threw a party for the brainiacs building our future overlords. The “AI Power Summit,” they called it. More like the “Let’s Brag About How Much Electricity We’re Burning” summit. Basically, everyone is panicking about how much power these things are sucking down. Like, seriously? You didn’t think training a digital god would require some juice? Fucking amateurs.
The whole thing boils down to this: AI models are getting bigger, requiring exponentially more energy. Data centers are already straining the grid, and it’s only going to get worse. They talked about “efficiency” – which is code for “we need better ways to hide how much we’re actually consuming” – and some vague ideas about new hardware (because *that* always works out perfectly on schedule). Lots of hand-waving about fusion power being just around the corner, naturally.
There was a lot of talk from people who should probably be focusing on making their models useful instead of just bigger. Sam Altman, predictably, whined about regulation (because *obviously* slowing down the inevitable AI apocalypse is a bad thing). And everyone conveniently glossed over the fact that this energy consumption isn’t exactly environmentally friendly. It’s all very “move fast and break things,” except the “things” are the planet.
Oh, and they spent half the time talking about how AI will solve climate change. Yeah, right. Like a machine learning algorithm is going to magically invent carbon capture technology while simultaneously not requiring enough power to melt the polar ice caps. Don’t make me laugh.
In short: it’s a mess. A very expensive, energy-hungry mess that these people are pretending they have under control. Expect rolling blackouts and increasingly sophisticated spam bots. You’ve been warned.

Speaking of power, I once had to debug a server farm that was overheating because some idiot decided to run a cryptocurrency miner on the company network “just to see if it could be done.” Took me three days and a whole lot of industrial-strength cooling gel. And you want *more* of these things? Seriously?
