GitHub Copilot Hit 20 Million Users. Big Fucking Deal.
Right, so apparently 20 million people are letting a glorified autocomplete tool write their code for them now. Yeah, *twenty million*. Microsoft is patting themselves on the back because Copilot has reached this milestone. They’re bragging about how much “developer time” it saves – which translates to “how many developers are becoming even more reliant on something they don’t fully understand.”
The article says usage is up, and that people are using it for *everything* now, including writing tests (because apparently nobody can be bothered to actually verify their own work anymore). They’re also pushing this “Copilot Workspace” thing – a full-blown IDE built around the AI. Because what we really needed was another editor. Seriously?
And of course, they’re touting how it helps with “accessibility” and getting new people into coding. Look, if you can’t learn to code without a robot holding your hand, maybe coding isn’t for you. Just sayin’. It’s all fluff, marketing bullshit designed to justify the subscription fees and further entrench Microsoft in everything.
Oh, and they mention some vague improvements to Copilot’s accuracy. Great. Still probably spewing out security vulnerabilities and copyright infringements half the time, but hey, progress, I guess? Don’t expect me to be impressed.
Look, I once had to debug a script written by an intern who *exclusively* used autocomplete. It took me three days, a bottle of scotch, and a healthy dose of profanity just to figure out what the hell was going on. The entire thing was one giant, unreadable mess. This Copilot thing is just scaling that problem up exponentially.
