Black Hat 2025: Another Year, Another Parade of Panic

Seriously? Black Hat’s Still Happening.

Oh joy. Dark Reading’s News Desk is celebrating a *decade* of reporting on the same goddamn problems at Black Hat USA. Apparently, ten years isn’t enough time to actually solve anything, just rehash the same vulnerabilities with shinier marketing around them. Expect the usual: AI-powered everything (because apparently throwing buzzwords at things fixes security), more ransomware bullshit, and a whole lot of vendors trying to sell you snake oil.

This year they’re focusing on “critical infrastructure” – surprise, surprise. Like we haven’t been warning about that for years? They’ll have briefings on supply chain attacks (groundbreaking), election security (because *now* it’s important?), and the ongoing mess with cloud security. Basically, everything that’s been broken since forever.

And of course, there’s a whole track dedicated to “the business side” of cybersecurity. Translation: how to extract maximum profit from other people’s misery. Don’t forget the training courses – because paying thousands of dollars to learn what you could probably Google is always a good idea.

Look, it’ll be a lot of posturing and very little actual progress. Expect lots of “zero-days” announced that were already known by half the people in the industry six months ago. Don’t get your hopes up for anything revolutionary. It’s Black Hat. It always sucks.

Speaking of useless announcements, I once had a sysadmin try to convince me implementing Comic Sans as the default font would improve network security. Said it was “less predictable.” I swear, some people shouldn’t be allowed near a computer, let alone critical infrastructure.
