Singapore & Its 4 Major Telcos Fend Off Chinese Hackers

Singapore Telcos Actually Manage to Do Their Fucking Jobs For Once

So apparently Singapore’s four major telcos—Singtel, StarHub, M1, and that other bargain-basement operation Simba—actually managed to notice when Chinese hackers came knocking. Miraculous. Usually these dipshits can’t find their own arseholes with both hands and a flashlight, but hey, blind squirrels and nuts, right?

The Cyber Security Agency of Singapore put out a statement patting everyone on the back for detecting and “neutralising” the threats. Translation: some junior sysadmin finally read the fucking alert emails instead of sending them straight to the dumpster like usual. The attacks were your typical APT bullshit—spear-phishing, malware, the usual song and dance from groups that probably have “People’s Liberation Army” on their business cards.

The CSA claims they “worked closely with the telcos” to fend off these assaults. Bullshit. I know how this works. The telcos probably called them in a blind panic after someone noticed their customer database was being exfiltrated at 2 AM, then sat around looking useless while the government team actually did the work. But sure, let’s give them credit for “collaboration.”

What’s really pissing me off is that they’re framing this as a victory. These attacks happen CONSTANTLY. The only reason this is news is because they didn’t completely balls it up for once. The hackers will be back next week with a new zero-day and slightly different email template, and the whole circus will start again. But hey, at least the press release makes everyone look competent.

The real kicker? They’re not naming which telco got hit hardest. Which means Singtel probably had their infrastructure turned into a fucking colander, and nobody wants to spook the shareholders. Transparency my arse.

**Related anecdote**: Had a user last week complaining their “internet was hacked” because they got a pop-up saying their computer had viruses. Turned out they’d been clicking every “You’ve won a prize!” banner since 2018. I fixed it by resetting their browser and confiscating their mouse. They thanked me by CC’ing my boss on an email saying I’d been “unhelpful and rude.” Management gave me a written warning. Meanwhile, this same muppet is probably handling customer data right now. Fucking brilliant system we’ve got here.
