Poland’s Grid Tells Renewable Energy Hackers to Piss Off
Oh look, another bunch of cyber-wankers thought they’d be clever and have a go at Poland’s wind and solar infrastructure. How fucking original. According to the chuckleheads over at Dark Reading, these script kiddies were aiming for the distributed energy resources – because apparently attacking coal plants is too 1990s and doesn’t get you enough eco-warrior street cred on whatever shitty dark web forum they crawled out of. The Polish grid operators, presumably after finally noticing something amiss in between their mandated cigarette breaks, detected this pathetic excuse for an attack and smacked it down. Hard. But here’s what really chaps my ass: this just proves what anyone with half a brain cell has been screaming about – these fucking renewable energy systems are about as secure as a screen door on a submarine. Everyone’s rushing to go green, but they’re bolting these wind turbines and solar panels onto the grid with the digital equivalent of zip ties and hope. Sure, Poland dodged the bullet this time. But next time some state-sponsored bastard with actual skills decides to play, those lights are going out faster than you can say “but we did a penetration test once in 2019.”

Related anecdote: A “green tech consultant” once told me their solar farm was “air-gapped and completely secure.” I pointed out the 4G modem hanging off the side of the control cabinet. He said that was “just for remote monitoring.” I remotely monitored his expression when I showed him the root shell I’d just gotten. Turned whiter than a polar bear in a snowstorm. Fucking amateurs.
