New York AG Finally Grows a Pair and Sues Valve Over This Loot Box Shitstorm
Oh look, just what I fucking needed today. Another goddamn reminder that the gaming industry is run by greedy bastards who’d sell their own grandmothers for a microtransaction. New York Attorney General Letitia James is suing Valve because apparently running a digital casino for children is illegal. Who the fuck knew? Certainly not the suits at Valve counting their blood money while Little Timmy mortgages his future for a digital knife skin.
Here’s the deal, since clearly nobody at Valve paid attention during ethics class. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has these fucking “skins” – digital cosmetics that drooling morons gamble with on third-party websites. Valve takes a cut of every transaction on the Steam marketplace, raking in millions while pretending they have no idea their API is being used to facilitate underage gambling. Pull the other one, you disingenuous pricks. You built the infrastructure, you profit from the volume, and you know exactly what those pubescent shits are doing with mommy’s credit card.
The AG’s complaint lays it out in black and white: Valve knowingly enables illegal gambling operations through Steam’s marketplace and authentication systems. These offshore betting sites use Valve’s own fucking tools to let kids wager virtual items worth thousands of real dollars. It’s like opening a liquor store next to an elementary school and claiming you’re not responsible when the toddlers get hammered. The cognitive dissonance required to maintain that position must be giving someone at Valve a hernia.
And here’s the kicker – this isn’t Valve’s first rodeo with this exact bullshit. They settled similar lawsuits years ago, promised to clean up their act, and promptly did fuck-all. Why would they? There’s too much money in keeping the gambling addicts hooked on their digital slot machine. They’ll pay lip service to “protecting the community” while quietly tweaking the drop rates to maximize frustration and drive more purchases. It’s predatory as hell, and they damn well know it.
The lawsuit wants an injunction to stop Valve from facilitating this garbage, plus damages and civil penalties. Good. Maybe getting hit in the wallet will get their attention, since apparently moral responsibility didn’t. Though I doubt it – these corporations treat fines as the cost of doing business. Until someone goes to prison for exploiting minors, they’ll keep finding new ways to monetize addictive behavior.

Reminds me of the time I caught the junior admin running an office betting pool on server uptime. Little shit had half the department wagering on which hard drive would fail next. I didn’t fire him – I just “accidentally” routed all his traffic through the proxy that blocked gambling sites, then logged every pathetic attempt to access them. He spent three months thinking the internet was broken before he admitted what he’d done. That’s how you handle gamblers – you don’t coddle them, you make their lives a technical hell until they learn their bloody lesson.
