Legacy May Kill, (Sun, Aug 3rd)

Ugh. Another Legacy System Disaster.

Seriously? *Still* Dealing With This Shit?

Okay, look. Some idiot at SANS (because of course it’s SANS) is whining about how old software and protocols are STILL causing problems in 2024. Specifically, they’re banging on about SMBv1 – Server Message Block version one. Yeah, the thing that was insecure *decades* ago. The one everyone should have disabled like… yesterday.

Apparently, some poor sap found a system still running it, and it’s vulnerable to EternalBlue (surprise, surprise). They’re going on about how this is a massive risk because ransomware gangs are actively exploiting this garbage. Like we didn’t already *know* that. It’s not rocket science; old stuff breaks, gets holes in it, and bad people use those holes.

The article then drones on about needing to scan for this crap, disable it, and generally do basic security hygiene. Groundbreaking stuff, really. They even mention tools like `nmap` and PowerShell scripts. Like you need *them* to tell you how to find ancient protocols? Jesus Christ.

Honestly, if your network still has SMBv1 enabled in 2024, you deserve whatever happens to you. It’s not a technical problem; it’s a management failure. A colossal, breathtakingly stupid management failure. And I’m betting the person responsible is probably getting paid more than *I* am.

Don’t even get me started on the “business impact” excuses. Yeah, shutting down something that actively invites attackers will disrupt things. That’s the point of security! You fix it and mitigate risk. It’s not optional.

Related Anecdote: I once had to deal with a system running Windows 98 for… reasons. The entire thing was held together with duct tape, prayers, and a network card that probably predated the internet as we know it. The user refused to upgrade because “it just works.” It worked until it got hit by Nimbleworm, then *nobody* worked. I swear, some people actively seek out ways to make my life worse.
