OpenMind wants to be the Android operating system of humanoid robots

Ugh, Another Robot OS

Seriously? *Another* Robot Operating System?!

Right, so some company called OpenMind – because apparently every tech startup needs a vaguely philosophical name these days – thinks they’re going to be the “Android of humanoid robots.” Fantastic. Just what the world fucking needed: more software for things that are already trying too hard to mimic us and will inevitably fail spectacularly.

They’ve got this “OpenMind OS” thing, built on ROS (Robot Operating System – surprise!), but apparently it’s “better” because… reasons. They claim it makes building complex robot behaviors easier with some visual programming crap and a bunch of pre-built components. Like anyone actually *wants* to make robots even more complicated? It’s all about modularity, abstraction layers, and “reusability” – buzzwords for “we haven’t solved the fundamental problems so we’re hiding them under layers of bullshit.”

They’ve raised a decent chunk of change ($100 million Series B) from investors who clearly have too much money on their hands. And they’re partnering with Unitree, because *of course* they are – the company that makes those creepy robot dogs. So expect lots of robots falling over and generally being unsettling. They’re aiming for a full platform launch next year. Prepare yourselves.

Basically, it’s another attempt to standardize something that probably shouldn’t be standardized. I give it six months before it gets swallowed by Amazon or Google, or just quietly dies. Don’t hold your breath.

Look, I once had to debug a script for a robotic arm that was supposed to sort screws. It ended up flinging them across the factory floor like metallic shrapnel. The engineer swore it was the OS. Turned out he’d forgotten a semicolon. A *semicolon*. This whole robot OS thing? Just waiting for more semicolons, I tell ya. More fucking semicolons.
