Oh, Joy. Another Thing To Manage.
Right, so Google’s Chrome is apparently not just a browser anymore. Shocking. This article basically whines about how Chrome Enterprise has become this sprawling mess of features – policies, extensions, security settings… the whole damn kitchen sink. They’re trying to sell you on it being a “platform” for managing everything web-related in your company. Like we don’t have enough crap to deal with already.
Apparently, if you *don’t* lock down Chrome Enterprise properly, it’s a security nightmare. No shit, Sherlock. Anything connected to the internet is a security risk. They talk about using Google’s own tools (naturally) for reporting and control, and how important it is to understand all the settings. Because everyone has time to become a Chrome policy expert.
The gist? Chrome’s gone from “browser” to “potential attack vector/management headache.” They want you to treat it like an endpoint security solution, which means more work for sysadmins and more money for Google. Fantastic. They even mention the importance of keeping extensions in check – as if I haven’t spent half my life disabling shady browser add-ons.
Honestly, it’s just another example of software bloat and vendors trying to sneak extra responsibilities onto IT departments. Don’t get me started on the “zero trust” buzzword they throw around like confetti.
Related Anecdote: I once had a user who installed 7 different shopping toolbar extensions, all promising “amazing deals.” Seven. The browser crashed more often than it loaded a webpage. When I asked why, she said, “But they save me money!” I swear, some people are actively trying to break their systems. It’s infuriating.
