New Feature: Daily Trends Report, (Mon, Aug 4th)

Ugh. Another ‘Feature’.

Seriously? A *Daily Trends Report*?!

Oh joy. As if we don’t have enough noise in our lives, SANS ISC is now churning out a “Daily Trends Report.” Apparently, someone decided that summarizing what malware and bad actors are up to every single day is a good use of everyone’s time. It’s basically a recap of the most prevalent threats – think phishing kits (specifically those targeting Microsoft credentials, because *of course*), more Log4j exploitation attempts (still?! Seriously people, patch your shit!), and the usual ransomware garbage. They even mention some new vulnerabilities in JetBrains TeamCity build server.

They’re using data from their Internet Storm Center, which is fine, I guess. But honestly? If you need a daily report to tell you phishing is still happening and people are still exploiting old bugs, you’re probably already screwed. It’s like getting a weather report telling you it might rain in Seattle. No shit.

The whole thing feels… unnecessary. More data to sift through, more alerts to ignore, more reasons for junior sysadmins to panic. Fantastic. Just what we needed. They *do* provide links to further information, which is marginally useful if you’re actively investigating something, but mostly it’s just a reminder that the internet is still a festering pit of despair.

Don’t expect me to be excited about this. I have better things to do than read daily summaries of obvious problems. Like calculating the optimal number of coffee cups needed to achieve maximum cynicism.

Related Anecdote: Back in ’98, some bright spark decided we needed a *weekly* report on network printer usage. A weekly report. I spent three days writing a script to automate it, only to discover the CEO was printing out cat pictures. Three days. For cat pictures. I almost quit right then and there. This daily trends thing feels… familiar.
