Cursor Fesses Up: That “New” Coding Model? Yeah, It’s Someone Else’s Shit
Alright, gather round, kids. It turns out Cursor, the shiny dev-tool darling, finally admitted what a bunch of grumpy bastards already suspected: its “new” coding model wasn’t lovingly handcrafted in-house by wizard engineers. Nope. It was built on top of Moonshot AI’s Kimi model. Surprise, motherfuckers.
According to TechCrunch, Cursor initially talked up its model like it was some bespoke, ground-up marvel. Then reality came knocking with a baseball bat. After people started poking holes in the story, Cursor owned up and said, yeah okay, it’s layered on Kimi — an existing large language model from Chinese AI startup Moonshot. So much for the myth of immaculate fucking conception.
Now, to be fair, building “on top of” another model isn’t illegal, immoral, or even unusual in AI land. Everybody and their dog is stacking wrappers on base models. The real problem is the marketing bullshit. When you imply you built the engine and it turns out you mostly polished the hood and tuned the radio, people get pissy. And by people, I mean developers — the most pedantic, grudge-holding bastards on the planet.
There’s also the awkward geopolitics angle. Kimi is Chinese, which sends certain enterprise customers straight into compliance-induced panic attacks. Cursor says it’s transparent now and clarifying how the model is used, but the damage is done. Trust, once fucked, stays fucked.
So the takeaway? Cursor didn’t exactly lie, but it sure as hell let everyone believe a more flattering version of the truth. In AI, that’s basically standard operating procedure — but don’t act shocked when users call bullshit.
