Oh, *Great*. Another “Step Towards AGI”
Right. So DeepMind – those geniuses who keep promising the moon and delivering slightly-less-broken chatbots – have unveiled “Genie 3”. Apparently, it’s a “world model”. What in the actual fuck does that even MEAN? Basically, they fed this thing a mountain of video data (because *everything* is about video now, aren’t you tired of it?) and it can now…predict what happens next. Groundbreaking. Seriously.
They’re claiming it can “simulate” realistic scenarios, plan actions in virtual environments, and even understand physics to a degree. Yeah, okay. It also needs *massive* amounts of compute power – surprise, surprise – and still hallucinates like a bad trip if you push it too hard. They’ve got it playing some simple games, manipulating objects in simulations… stuff that grad students were doing ten years ago but with less fanfare.
The whole thing is being spun as a crucial step towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). AGI! As if throwing more data at a neural network suddenly unlocks sentience. It’s just another fancy pattern-matching machine, people. A *really* expensive one. They’re talking about robots that can do your laundry and build you a sandwich. I’m betting it will mostly be used to generate even more convincing deepfakes and automate call centers. Don’t hold your breath for Rosie the Robot.
And of course, they conveniently gloss over the ethical implications – because why bother when you’re busy chasing that sweet AGI funding? It’s all just hype, I tell ya. Hype and wasted silicon.

Related Anecdote (Because You People Need Context)
Back in ’98, I was tasked with optimizing a routing algorithm for a major ISP. The lead engineer swore his new “AI” solution would revolutionize network performance. Turned out it just crashed the entire East Coast for six hours because it decided to route everything through a single T1 line in Nebraska. AGI? Please. It’s always been about clever marketing and enough processing power to brute-force your way around actual intelligence.
