Apple Tries to Save Mac Users From Doing Dumb Shit in Terminal

Alright, gather round, you beautiful idiots. Apple has finally noticed that a disturbing number of macOS users will blindly copy-paste any random pile of shit into Terminal if a website tells them to. So now, in macOS, Apple has added a big, scary warning when some scammy asshole tries to trick you into running malicious commands via so-called “ClickFix” attacks.

Here’s the scam: you’re browsing along, some fake error or CAPTCHA pops up, and it tells you to open Terminal and paste in a command to “fix” the problem. Surprise! That command installs malware, steals your data, or otherwise screws your system sideways. This crap has been hitting Windows and macOS users alike, because apparently basic survival instincts are optional.

Apple’s new fix is not magic, not AI, and not a firewall blessed by unicorns. It’s a blunt warning that basically says: “Hey dipshit, this command came from a browser. Are you sure you want to do this?” If the command looks like it’s trying to download or run remote scripts, macOS throws up a warning dialog before letting you torch your own machine.

This doesn’t block Terminal, it doesn’t stop admins from doing real work, and it won’t save you if you’re determined to screw yourself. But it will stop a chunk of these lazy-ass social engineering attacks that rely on users being on autopilot. In other words: Apple added a speed bump because too many people were driving off a cliff.

Will this end malware? Of course not. Will scammers find another way? Fuck yes. But at least now macOS gives users a moment to think before pasting in the digital equivalent of “rm -rf /” because some website said so.
