How to Evaluate AI SOC Agents (or: How Not to Buy Another Overpriced Pile of Shit)
Alright, gather round, kids. Gartner has decided to do everyone in security a solid and spell out seven basic, painfully obvious questions you should be asking before you let some shiny “AI SOC agent” loose in your environment. Because apparently, in 2026, people are still buying security tools the same way they buy diet pills: big promises, zero thinking, and later—regret.
First off: what the fuck does the AI actually do? Is it just a glorified chatbot slapping labels on alerts, or can it investigate, correlate, and respond without shitting itself? Vendors love saying “autonomous” while quietly meaning “needs a human every five seconds.” Gartner says: nail down the scope, or enjoy your new very expensive alert-forwarding machine.
Next: how autonomous is this thing, really? Can it act on its own, or does it panic and ask permission like an intern on day one? If the AI can shut things down, you’d better know when, why, and how it does it—otherwise you’re one bad prompt away from nuking production. Fun times.
Then there’s the data question: what shit is it trained on and what shit does it ingest? If the answer is “trust us,” you should already be walking out. Garbage data in means garbage decisions out—only now they’re faster and more confident. Congrats, you’ve automated stupidity.
Gartner also bangs on about transparency and explainability. If the AI can’t explain why it flagged something, blocked something, or ignored something, it’s a black box full of bullshit. And when the auditors or execs come sniffing around, “the AI said so” is not going to save your ass.
Security and privacy matter too—shocking, I know. Where does your data go, who can see it, and how is it protected? If your AI SOC agent leaks incident data like a sieve or trains on your logs without proper controls, you’ve just paid money to create a brand-new risk. Genius move.
Integration is another big one. Does this thing actually work with your existing tools, or does it demand you rebuild the SOC around it? If the answer involves “rip and replace,” that’s vendor-speak for “we couldn’t be bothered to integrate worth a damn.”
Finally, Gartner asks the question everyone hates: how do you measure value? Less noise? Faster response? Fewer 3 a.m. pages? If you can’t define success, you’ll end up with dashboards full of pretty lies and no actual improvement—just another checkbox tool rotting in the stack.
Bottom line: AI SOC agents aren’t magic, they aren’t cheap, and they sure as hell aren’t idiot-proof. Ask the hard questions now, or spend the next three years explaining to management why your “AI-powered SOC” still can’t tell a real incident from a fart in the logs.
