Microsoft removes Support and Recovery Assistant from Windows

Microsoft Kills SaRA, Because Of Course They Fucking Did

Alright you poor bastards, gather round. Microsoft has officially taken the Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA) out back and shot it. Yep, the one tool that occasionally, accidentally, maybe helped fix Outlook or Office without sacrificing a goat to Redmond? Gone. Fucking gone.

According to Microsoft (and reported by BleepingComputer), SaRA is no longer supported on Windows. Instead of a local troubleshooting tool that actually ran on your machine, Microsoft wants you to use their shiny, web-based “support experiences.” Because nothing screams efficient troubleshooting like a browser, a Microsoft account login, and three dozen useless wizard pages that end with “contact support.”

This is part of Microsoft’s ongoing scorched-earth campaign that also killed off MSDT. The excuse? “Security” and “modernization.” Translation: maintaining useful tools costs money, and fuck you, that’s why. They’d rather funnel everyone into the cloud where they can track, log, upsell, and ultimately fail to fix your problem in new and exciting ways.

If you already have SaRA installed, enjoy it while it lasts — it’s basically abandonware now. Microsoft’s answer is to use the web-based support portal or the built-in Get Help app, which is about as helpful as a screen door on a submarine.

So once again, sysadmins lose a tool that sometimes worked, in exchange for a polished turd of an online workflow. I hope you enjoy explaining to users why Outlook is broken while Microsoft’s website suggests rebooting and signing in again. Fucking brilliant.

Personal anecdote time: This reminds me of the time I fixed a CEO’s email in five minutes with SaRA, only for Microsoft to later tell me the “recommended solution” was to reinstall Windows. I fixed it anyway, billed the company, and went to the pub. Now Microsoft’s taken away the tool and replaced it with a fucking web form.
