Oh, *Now* They Care About Publishers?
Right. So Google’s suddenly all concerned about website traffic after years of systematically dismantling the open web to shove more ads down people’s throats and now, AI-generated answers directly into search results. They’re claiming their new “AI Overview” features aren’t tanking publisher numbers? Bullshit. Pure, unadulterated bullshit.
The article basically details how Google is desperately trying to spin this PR nightmare. They’ve released some internal data (which, naturally, they say proves everything’s fine) showing that a tiny percentage of queries *don’t* result in clicks to websites. Like that makes up for the fact they’re answering everything themselves now! They’re also blaming “seasonal trends” and other vague nonsense.
They’ve even started tweaking things – adding more links, letting publishers request removal from AI Overviews (because *that* fixes anything), and promising to be “more transparent.” It’s all a pathetic attempt to appease the very people they’re actively screwing over. They are saying that 90% of queries still lead to websites but who knows what metrics they are using, it’s probably some internal metric that means nothing.
Basically, Google broke something and is now pretending it didn’t, while simultaneously trying to patch it up with half-assed fixes. Don’t believe a word of it. They only care about their bottom line, not the health of the internet. Expect more of this crap until we figure out how to collectively tell them to shove it.
Seriously, who are they kidding?

Related Anecdote (Because You Asked)
I once had to debug a routing issue on a major backbone network. Turns out, some idiot in facilities decided it would be a *great* idea to “optimize” cable runs by bundling everything together with zip ties… including the fiber optic cables. Yeah, you guessed it. Signal degradation everywhere. Google is doing the same thing here – “optimizing” for profit and completely ignoring the underlying infrastructure (the web) until it all falls apart. Except this time, it’s not just *my* weekend ruined.
