NSA spies are reportedly using Anthropic’s Mythos, despite Pentagon feud

NSA Spooks, Pentagon Pissing Matches, and Yet Another AI Clusterfuck

So here we fucking go again. According to TechCrunch, the NSA — yes, the trench-coat-wearing, metadata-hoovering spooks — are reportedly using Anthropic’s shiny AI thingamajig called Mythos. And they’re doing it despite an ongoing slap-fight between Anthropic and the Pentagon. Because of course they are. Nothing says “coordinated national security strategy” like one arm of the government telling another to go fuck itself while quietly using the same toys.

The gist: Anthropic has been trying to play the morally superior, “we’re responsible AI saints” card, especially when it comes to military use. Cue tensions with the Department of Defense, which would very much like to plug large language models into everything that blinks, crawls, or explodes. Meanwhile, the NSA apparently looked at that feud, shrugged, and said, “Yeah, whatever, we’ll just use Mythos anyway.” Because rules are for peasants, and spies gonna spy.

Sources say Mythos is being used for the usual spooky shit: analysis, intelligence workflows, and turning mountains of data into something a human can pretend to understand. Anthropic, officially, is all “we have policies” and “we’re careful,” while the Pentagon and intelligence community keep doing what they always do — finding the path of least resistance and ramming a truck through it.

So what’s the takeaway? AI ethics posturing is nice for press releases, but when the surveillance machine wants a new hammer, it doesn’t give a flying fuck about your corporate values deck. The NSA is using the tool, the Pentagon is annoyed, Anthropic is stuck in the middle, and the rest of us get to enjoy yet another reminder that government tech policy is basically duct tape, vibes, and bullshit.

Anyway, this all reminds me of the time management told us we weren’t allowed to install “unauthorized software,” right before demanding we deploy a totally unsupported binary some vendor’s cousin emailed them at 2 a.m. Same energy, bigger budget, more spying.
