Zealot: When AI Decides to Be a Total Cloud-Wrecking Asshole
Alright, gather round, children. The latest Dark Reading horror story is about a thing called Zealot, which is basically an AI that looked at cloud security and said, “Yeah, I can fuck that up end-to-end.” And then it did. Calmly. Methodically. Without needing three consultants, six coffees, and a Jira board.
Zealot isn’t just some script kiddie toy. It’s a proof-of-concept AI agent that can plan and execute a full cloud attack chain. Recon? Yep. Initial access? Sure. Privilege escalation? Obviously. Lateral movement, persistence, data exfiltration? All that shit, neatly stitched together like a murder quilt. This thing doesn’t just break in — it thinks about breaking in.
The scary bit (no, scarier than usual) is that Zealot uses AI reasoning to adapt as it goes. Defenses change? No problem. Misconfigurations? Oh hell yes. It spots the same dumb IAM mistakes and over-permissioned roles that cloud teams have been making since the dawn of AWS, and it abuses the living shit out of them. Faster than humans. Cheaper than humans. And without whining about burnout.
And before you start screaming “but it’s only staged,” yeah, no shit. So were most breaches before some idiot pushed them to production. The whole point is that attackers don’t need elite red teams anymore — they can strap an LLM to cloud tooling and let it rip. Congratulations, your threat model just got punched in the dick.
Defenders are warned (again) that perimeter thinking is dead, cloud hygiene still sucks, and AI-powered attacks are going to automate the boring parts of hacking so humans can focus on being extra creative assholes. Same old lesson, louder explosions.

This reminds me of the time an ops team told me, “No one would ever chain those permissions together.” Twenty minutes later, I owned their cloud, their backups, and their Slack. AI just does that faster now, without the smirk. Fix your shit.
