Mass Internet Scanning from ASN 43350 [Guest Diary], (Thu, Aug 7th)

Ugh. Another Fucking Scan.

Seriously? More Scanning Bullshit

Right, listen up, you lot. Some dipshit over in ASN 43350 – which, surprise surprise, is a Russian hosting provider – is letting their clients run MASSIVE internet-wide scans. Like, *really* massive. We’re talking millions of IPs getting poked and prodded. They’ve been at it for weeks, starting around July 28th, and it’s not just a quick sweep either; they’re doing full TCP port scans.

The SANS ISC guys have tracked it back to specific IP ranges within that ASN, mostly residential IPs which is *fantastic* because who needs legitimate traffic anyway? It’s probably some script kiddies or someone building a botnet, honestly. Or maybe they’re just bored. Whatever the reason, it’s noisy as hell and clogs up everything for everyone else.

They’ve contacted abuse contacts at ASN 43350 (good luck with *that*, I say), but who knows if anything will actually happen. Expect to see more of this crap, because apparently nobody cares about being a good netizen anymore. Block the IPs they listed if you can be bothered, but honestly? It’s like trying to empty the ocean with a teaspoon.

Don’t ask me why I have to report on this garbage. I have better things to do, like contemplate the futility of existence and optimize kernel parameters. But noooo, *someone* has to keep you all informed about the latest wave of internet assholery.

Original Article – Because You Apparently Need It

Speaking of scans, I once had to deal with a user who thought running nmap against the entire company network was “testing security.” Testing *my* patience, more like. I told him if he did it again, I’d personally reconfigure his workstation to only output gibberish. He didn’t repeat the offense. Some people learn.
