Windows 365 Reserve: Let the Users Fix Their Own Shit (Sort Of)
Alright, listen up. This article is about Windows 365 Reserve, Microsoft’s latest attempt to stop admins like me from being screamed at when a user’s Cloud PC goes tits-up. The basic idea: when a user’s primary Cloud PC is unavailable (dead, broken, on fire, whatever), Microsoft lets them spin up a temporary replacement Cloud PC all by their useless little selves. Yes, user-initiated provisioning. I know. Pour yourself a stiff drink.
Admins preconfigure a pool of “Reserve” Cloud PCs in advance. Think of it as spare tires for the clown car. When a user’s main Cloud PC is unavailable for too long, Windows 365 automatically offers them a Reserve Cloud PC. The user clicks a button, waits a bit, and boom — they’re back in business without opening a ticket and ruining my afternoon. Fucking miracles do happen.
These Reserve Cloud PCs are temporary. They don’t live forever, unlike user stupidity. Data and apps come from the same policies and images you already set up, so no, you don’t get to skip proper configuration. Licensing is separate too, because of course Microsoft wants more money. You assign Reserve licenses, define how many backup PCs exist, and set how long users can squat on them.
The big win? Reduced downtime and fewer angry emails. Users get something usable fast, admins get fewer bullshit emergencies, and IT doesn’t have to manually provision a “just this once” Cloud PC at 3 a.m. The downside? More things to configure, more licenses to track, and users feeling empowered — which is always dangerous.
Bottom line: Windows 365 Reserve is Microsoft admitting that Cloud PCs fail and that admins are sick of cleaning up the mess. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than being the human fallback system every damn time something breaks.

Anecdote time: This reminds me of the day I labeled a server rack “DO NOT TOUCH” and users still touched it, blamed IT, and demanded a fix in five minutes. Windows 365 Reserve is basically Microsoft saying, “Here, click this and stop bothering the bastard running the system.” About fucking time.
