Microsoft 365 apps to soon block file access via FPRPC by default

Microsoft’s Latest “Helpful” Intervention

Oh, Joy. Microsoft is “Helping” Again.

Right, listen up, you lot. Apparently, some ancient-ass protocol called FPRPC (File Protocol RPC) – seriously, who even *remembers* this garbage? – is still kicking around and letting bad guys waltz into your systems like they own the place. Because, naturally, people never update anything.

Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom (and by “wisdom” I mean “desperate attempt to cover their own asses”), are going to start blocking file access via this prehistoric method *by default*. Yes, you heard that right. They’re breaking things to “fix” them. Like a toddler smashing a perfectly good clock because it doesn’t tell time the way they want.

They’re giving you a few months – starting with Current Channel in February and rolling out to everyone else later – to get your act together and use something, *anything*, more secure. If you haven’t bothered to migrate away from this dinosaur tech, expect things to stop working. And don’t come crying to me when it does.

They claim this affects a small number of users, but knowing how many companies run on duct tape and prayers, I guarantee that “small number” is bigger than they’re letting on. Expect compatibility issues with ancient applications and probably a whole lot of panicked support calls. It’s all just *wonderful*.

Seriously, if you’re still using FPRPC in 2024, I question your life choices.

Speaking of legacy crap, I once had to debug a system that relied on punch cards. *Punch cards*. The user insisted it was “reliable” because “it’s always worked.” I swear, some people just want to watch the world burn. And Microsoft is enabling them, one forced update at a time.
