KrebsOnSecurity: Now a Fucking TV Show
Right, so apparently some Hollywood types decided to make a show about real-life cybercrime investigations. And guess whose work they’re ripping off? That’s right, me. Brian Krebs, the guy who actually *does* this shit for a living, is being “featured” in an HBO Max series called “Most Wanted.”
The show focuses on a unit within the FBI that tracks down cybercriminals – specifically, it’s based around the takedown of REvil, that ransomware gang everyone and their mother was dealing with back in 2021. They’re using my reporting as… inspiration? Source material? Whatever you want to call it when they profit off someone else’s hard work.
Apparently, they’ve taken “creative liberties” (read: made stuff up) and are portraying KrebsOnSecurity as some kind of shadowy intelligence source for the FBI. Look, I write about this crap; I don’t *run* it. There’s a difference between reporting on things and being goddamn James Bond.
Krebs himself has seen an early cut and says it’s…a show. He points out inaccuracies (shocker) but also acknowledges the actors did a decent job. Fine, whatever. Just don’t expect me to be impressed that they dramatized things I already explained in excruciating detail years ago.
The whole thing airs on November 14th. If you’re bored enough and enjoy fictionalized versions of reality, go ahead. But don’t come crying to me when it’s wildly inaccurate. I’ll be over here actually *fighting* the bad guys, not pretending to on a streaming service.
Speaking of inaccuracies, once had some idiot ask me if I could just “hack” their ex-girlfriend’s email account. Seriously? You think someone who spends all day writing about security vulnerabilities would casually break the law for your pathetic revenge fantasy? Get a life, people.
