Seriously? *Another* One. BigID’s “Shadow AI” Thing
Right, so apparently everyone and their grandmother is shoving AI models into production without a single thought for security. Shocking. BigID, bless their profit-driven hearts, has decided to capitalize on this idiocy with something they’re calling “Shadow AI Discovery.” Basically, it’s a tool that tries to find all the AI crap people are deploying without telling anyone – models, datasets, the whole shebang.
They claim it scans your cloud environments and data stores (because *of course* it does) looking for this “shadow AI” which is apparently a massive risk. Risks like data leakage, compliance violations, intellectual property theft… you know, all the usual stuff that happens when you let interns play with sensitive information. It’s got fancy features like model lineage tracking and data access control – things you *should* be doing anyway if you weren’t complete morons.
The whole thing is built around their existing data intelligence platform, which means it probably just repackages a bunch of stuff they already sell. And naturally, it supports all the major cloud providers because that’s how these vendors operate. They even threw in some generative AI risk assessment features, because *everything* has to have “generative AI” slapped on it now.
Look, it’s probably a decent product for companies too lazy or incompetent to manage their own AI deployments. But honestly? If you need a tool to tell you what AI models are running in your environment, you’ve already lost. Get your shit together and implement some basic security practices before wasting money on this.
Related Anecdote: I once had to clean up a mess where a developer uploaded the entire customer database to Hugging Face “for testing.” Testing! The guy thought it was a public code repository. Seriously, people are unbelievable. This Shadow AI thing is just treating the symptom, not the disease of utter incompetence.
