CUDA Proves Nvidia Is a Software Company (And Hardware Is Just the Shiny Bait)

Alright, listen up, meatbags. This Wired piece basically says what every grizzled sysadmin has known for years while babysitting overheated GPUs: Nvidia isn’t a “hardware company.” That’s marketing bullshit. Nvidia is a software company that just happens to ship very expensive, very loud space heaters.

The real crown jewel is CUDA. Not the silicon. Not the ray-traced unicorn vomit. CUDA is the proprietary software platform that locks researchers, AI nerds, scientists, and data weasels into Nvidia’s ecosystem tighter than a forgotten root password. Once you build your code on CUDA, you’re screwed—in the long-term, vendor-lock-in sense. Switching away is painful, expensive, and likely to end in tears and budget meetings.
