Seriously? Google’s Letting This Happen?!
Oh, *fantastic*. So, some chuckleheads are running fake Tesla websites – and I mean REALLY bad ones, like the kind your grandma would fall for if she hadn’t already blocked all pop-up ads – and they’re paying Google to advertise them. Yeah, you read that right. Google is taking money from scammers pretending to sell Teslas that don’t exist or are wildly overpriced.
Apparently, these sites were just ripping off images and descriptions straight from Tesla’s actual website (originality: zero stars). People click the ads thinking they’re getting a deal, get redirected to garbage landing pages asking for credit card info, and who knows what happens next? Probably identity theft. Or worse, they end up on a site that just endlessly loops Rick Astley.
SANS ISC managed to track down a bunch of these domains and reported them to Google (because apparently *they* couldn’t find them themselves – brilliant). The article says it’s been going on for at least a week. A WEEK! How much damage did these morons cause before anyone noticed? It’s just… infuriating.
Look, I get that Google wants ad revenue, but seriously? Vetting your advertisers isn’t exactly rocket science. This is basic security hygiene. It’s like leaving the front door of a bank unlocked and then being surprised when people walk in and steal stuff. Utterly pathetic.
Don’t click suspicious ads, people! Use common sense. And Google? Get your shit together.

Related Anecdote: Back in ’98, I had a user who thought a popup promising free internet was legit. Spent three hours on the phone with him explaining why giving his bank details to a Nigerian prince wasn’t a good idea. Three *hours*. I swear, some people are just begging to be scammed. Makes you question the future of humanity, it really does.
