Microsoft removes PowerShell 2.0 from Windows 11, Windows Server

Microsoft’s Latest Fuckery

Seriously? PowerShell 2.0 is *GONE*?!

Oh, for the love of all that is holy… Microsoft has finally yanked PowerShell 2.0 from newer versions of Windows – specifically, Windows 11 and Server 2022. Yeah, you heard me right. The thing they should have killed years ago, they’re just *now* getting around to it. Apparently, security vulnerabilities are a problem when you leave ancient software lying around like digital garbage.

They claim this is about “security enhancements” and pushing people to newer versions (PowerShell 5.1 or PowerShell 7.x). Translation: they want everyone on the latest stuff so they can shove more crapware down your throats and make sure their telemetry collection is as comprehensive as possible. Don’t believe a word of it.

If you’re still clinging to PowerShell 2.0, well…you deserve whatever happens. Seriously, upgrade already! It’s been EOL for ages. But expect things to break because *of course* they do when Microsoft decides to change something fundamental. They’ve also added some detection mechanisms so it won’t even install if you try and be clever.

And naturally, this is going to cause a massive headache for anyone with legacy scripts or applications that haven’t been updated since the Clinton administration. Because why make things easy when you can inflict pain? It’s their specialty.

Just… fantastic. Absolutely fucking fantastic.

Related Anecdote: I once had to support a system running Windows XP with Internet Explorer 6 and a custom application written in Visual Basic 6 that *absolutely* required PowerShell 2.0 for some obscure function. The developer had left the company ten years prior, documentation was non-existent, and the client refused to upgrade because “it just works.” I spent three days reverse-engineering the script only to find out it did nothing useful except display a welcome message. Three days of my life wasted on Microsoft’s legacy bullshit. Don’t be that guy.
