According to a shiny new study TechCrunch is waving around, only 16 percent of Americans think AI will have a positive impact on society. Sixteen. That’s not a typo. The rest are somewhere between “meh” and “this shit is going to burn everything down.”
Why the sour mood? Well, let’s see: AI taking jobs, AI spewing misinformation like a drunk uncle on Facebook, AI hoovering up personal data like it’s free beer, and companies shoving half-baked models into everything that has a power button. Apparently, people notice this crap.
The study says folks are especially worried about economic damage, privacy going straight to hell, and nobody being accountable when algorithms screw things up. Trust is low, skepticism is high, and the hype machine has officially pissed off the audience it was supposed to impress.
