AWS Lambda MicroVMs: Eight Hours of Stateful Bullshit (Now With Extra Isolation)
Alright, listen up. AWS has decided that Lambda—previously the jittery, goldfish-brained serverless runt that forgot everything every few minutes—has grown the fuck up. They’ve shoved it into shiny little microVMs (thanks, Firecracker) so your Lambda functions can now run statefully for up to eight whole goddamn hours. Yes, eight. That’s longer than some of my outages and most of my meetings.
The big deal? Isolation. Each Lambda gets its own microVM, meaning your code is boxed off like a misbehaving user in a padded cell. No more worrying about noisy neighbors pissing in your memory space. It’s still serverless, but now with fewer “surprise, your runtime vanished” moments. AWS wants you to trust this shit for workloads that used to scream “EC2 or ECS,” like data processing, simulations, and other long-running nonsense.
And yes, it’s stateful. That means your function can remember stuff between invocations instead of acting like it’s got amnesia after every coffee break. Local disk sticks around, memory sticks around, and you don’t have to duct-tape DynamoDB or S3 onto everything just to remember what the hell you were doing five minutes ago. About fucking time.
AWS is basically saying: “See? You don’t need servers.” Which is adorable, because when this inevitably goes sideways at 3 a.m., it’ll still be your problem. But credit where it’s due—this blurs the line between Lambda and traditional compute even more. Fewer servers to babysit, more abstractions to curse at. Progress.
Bottom line: Lambda microVMs mean longer runtimes, better isolation, and state that doesn’t evaporate like your patience. It’s serverless growing a pair, wrapped in a VM, and billed by the millisecond because AWS always gets its pound of flesh.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, this reminds me of the time management said “just make it serverless” to fix a twelve-hour batch job. I laughed, they insisted, it exploded, and somehow I was blamed. Same shit, new microVM.
