Oh, For Fucking Christ’s Sake…
Right, listen up. Some “researchers” – and I use that term *loosely* – have found yet another way your smart home is a dumpster fire waiting to happen. Apparently, if you leave your virtual appliances running in metaverse-type environments (think Second Life but for…stuff), they can bleed real-world energy. Yes, you read that correctly. Your digital toaster could be racking up your electric bill while you’re not even looking.
They poked holes in a bunch of platforms – Spatial, Vircadia, Horizon Worlds, and Neos VR – and discovered these virtual gadgets weren’t properly isolated from the actual power grid. It’s all about how they handle “persistent state” or whatever fancy term they want to use for “didn’t bother securing shit.” A badly coded virtual oven stays *on* even when you log off, drawing juice in the real world through some convoluted system of server-side scripting and…ugh, I don’t even want to get into it.
The worst part? It’s not just ovens. Lights, TVs, who knows what else. And fixing this is going to be a monumental pain in the ass because it requires cooperation from all these different metaverse providers. Good luck with *that*. They can barely keep their servers running reliably, let alone secure them.
So yeah, go check your virtual appliances. Turn everything off. And seriously, question every single “convenience” feature that involves connecting anything to the internet. You’re just asking for trouble.
Honestly, people are so easily distracted by shiny objects they don’t think about basic security principles. It’s infuriating.

Back in ’98, I had a user who left a telnet session open to a router…on a Friday afternoon. Came back Monday morning and the entire network was being used for some godforsaken Beanie Babies trading site. The bill? Let’s just say it involved several strongly worded emails and a very red face from the IT manager. This metaverse crap is just that, but on a much larger scale. Don’t even get me started.
