Ivanti EPM: Because Who Needs Security Anyway?
Oh for fuck’s sake. Just when I thought I could have a quiet Friday without some vendor’s dumpster fire of a codebase shitting all over my network, CISA drops this bouquet of bad news.
Turns out that Ivanti Endpoint Manager – or as I like to call it, “Ivanti Endpoint Mangler” – has been strutting around with CVE-2024-29847, an unauthenticated deserialization flaw that’s about as welcome as a rootkit in your underwear. And NOW, months after Ivanti finally pulled their finger out and patched it in fucking September, CISA has deigned to tell us that surprise, surprise, the bastards in the wild are actually using it to break into systems.
This isn’t just a vulnerability; it’s a fucking open bar for anyone who can spell “deserialization.” Unauthenticated remote code execution? Check. Data theft? Check. Complete pwnage of your carefully curated (read: held together with duct tape and prayers) enterprise endpoints? Double fucking check.
And here’s the kicker – Ivanti knew about this shit back in September as part of their Patch Tuesday hand-waving exercise. They’ve had months to shout about it. But no, we had to wait for CISA to add it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog before federal agencies got their marching orders to patch by November 4th. Because apparently, “actively exploited in the wild” is the only language management understands when it’s not coming from a golf course.
If you’re still running unpatched Ivanti EPM or Avalanche (yeah, that affected too, genius), you’re basically leaving the keys in the ignition with a sign saying “STEAL ME” taped to the windshield. The only difference between this and placing your database on Pastebin is the font choice.

Reminds me of the time I found the PFY had set the domain admin password to “Password123” because “it’s easier to remember when I’m hammered.” I didn’t fire the little shit. I just routed the entire accounting department’s daily reports to his home printer for six months until his wife left him and his ink budget rivaled the GDP of a small nation. He learned. Ivanti won’t.
