Bernie, AOC, and the Great “Turn Off the Fucking Servers” Plan
Alright, gather round, meatbags. The politicians have discovered data centers. Yes, those blinking, humming boxes that keep your porn, crypto scams, AI hype, and Slack messages alive. Bernie Sanders and AOC have popped up with a shiny new idea: a proposed ban on new data center construction. Because when you don’t understand infrastructure, the obvious solution is to hit it with a big red “NO” button and feel morally superior.
The gist of this shitshow is that data centers use too much power, too much water, and apparently too much audacity. AI workloads are sucking electricity like a frat boy at an open bar, and these two are worried it’s frying the grid, cooking the planet, and stealing resources from regular people. Fair concern, sure — but the solution they landed on is basically “stop building the internet.” Genius.
They’re framing it as a temporary ban — a “pause,” because that sounds nicer than “we have no fucking idea how this works.” The plan is to figure out environmental standards, energy limits, and whether Big Tech should be allowed to keep setting the planet on fire to generate cat pictures and hallucinating chatbots. Meanwhile, the rest of us sysadmins are staring at the capacity graphs screaming, “You absolute muppets, demand doesn’t pause.”
Tech industry folks, predictably, are losing their shit. No new data centers means no cloud expansion, no AI growth, higher prices, and outages that will make Black Friday look like a calm fucking picnic. But hey, at least the press release will feel righteous while everything 500s and your bank app shits itself.
Look, I get it. Data centers are power-hungry monsters. They need regulation, smarter energy use, and less bullshit. But banning construction is like dealing with traffic by banning roads. It’s performative, dumb, and guarantees I’ll be getting paged at 3 a.m. while some senator sleeps soundly, convinced they “saved the environment.”
Read the original TechCrunch article here, before someone proposes banning electricity entirely:

Now if you’ll excuse me, this reminds me of the time management decided to “save power” by turning off half the servers without telling anyone. The SAN panicked, the database imploded, and suddenly it was my fault for “not being green enough.” Same energy, different assholes.
