Stripe Unleashes Link So AI Can Go Shopping Without You — What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Alright, gather round, meatbags. Stripe has rolled out Link, a digital wallet that now lets autonomous AI agents buy shit online without a human hovering over the mouse like a paranoid raccoon. Yes, your robot intern can now whip out a wallet and go shopping. What a time to be alive. Or unemployed.

The idea is simple (which means it’ll be abused immediately): Link securely stores payment info so AI agents can complete purchases on your behalf. Stripe says this is for “agentic commerce,” which is corporate-speak for “we’re letting bots spend your money, but trust us, it’s totally fine.” Merchants already using Stripe don’t have to redo their crap — Link just plugs in and works. Allegedly.

To avoid total financial armageddon, Stripe slapped on some guardrails: permissions, spending limits, merchant restrictions, and authentication rules. In theory, your AI can only buy what you allow. In practice? Yeah, sure. I’ve heard that one before, right before a system wiped the CEO’s laptop and ordered 400 rubber chickens on the company card.

Stripe’s betting big that AI agents will become normal digital workers — booking services, restocking supplies, and handling purchases at machine speed. Link is their way of making sure Stripe still gets its cut when the humans are phased out. Smart? Yes. Comforting? Fuck no.

So congratulations: your future coworker doesn’t need sleep, doesn’t need benefits, and now doesn’t even need you to type in a credit card number. Just don’t act surprised when the bot expense report says, “Trust me, bro.”

Related anecdote: This reminds me of the time someone gave an “automation script” admin rights and a corporate card. Five minutes later, production was down, the card was maxed out, and the script was cheerfully logging “TASK COMPLETED.” Same energy, just with better branding.
